MEDI-CAL CUTS TO OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AS AN OPTIONAL SERVICE

OTAC has confirmed that the Governor has proposed to eliminate occupational therapy for adults as an optional benefit under Medi-Cal. It is proposed as part of the Governor's proposed "trigger reductions" which are enacted if the Governor is unable to secure $6.9 billion in additional resources from the federal government. The Optional Benefits that would be eliminated are: Hearing Aids, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Orthotics, Independent Rehabilitation Facilities, Outpatient Heroin Detox, Medical Supplies, Prosthetics and Durable Medical Equipment.

OTAC President Shawn Phipps, M.S., OTR/L, has appointed Susan Harris, OTR/L, (sharris@therapyspecialists.net) and Laura Stewart, M.A., OTR/L, CHT, (laurastewart@earthlink.net) to lead an ad hoc committee on this important issue.
