Course Description
October 1, 2019 marks the start of the new Medicare payment system, the Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM). The PDPM mandates the provision of high-quality care that is evidence-based and patient centered. A key indicator that will be measured is fall prevention. It is vital that occupational and physical therapy practitioners address falls throughout the continuum of care and have a thorough understanding of the multiple factors, which contribute to falls. Fall prevention is an interdisciplinary effort and involves various healthcare providers: nursing staff, physicians, occupational therapy practitioners (OTs) and physical therapy practitioners (PT). The aim of this course is to improve OTs and PTs understanding of the complex nature of falls, and to gain an understanding and ability to utilize evidence-based interventions to reduce the incidence of falls. This clinical application course will enable OTs and PTs to effectively identify potential fall etiologies and formulate an evidenced based fall prevention plan to reduce the incidence of falls.
