Babies with sensory dysregulation need support to provide appropriate state control for improved intake. Sensory support areas to be covered that lead to feeding success will include review of an appropriate sensory system, diagnoses that can affect the sensory system, sensory responses in babies under three months, and treatment ideas for perseveration and habituation. Case studies will be shared to demonstrate successful strategies for perseveration and habituation. The presentation will provide opportunity for Q&A.
Learning Objectives
Attendees will learn to:
- Identify three diagnoses in the neonatal intensive care unit or outpatient setting that result in sensory over stimulation or under-stimulation and feeding delays.
- Describe perseveration and habituation.
- Identify three treatment strategies can improve feeding behaviors in a baby that has an over- or under-stimulated sensory system.
