This presentation will explore how understanding generational differences can strengthen the relationship between fieldwork educators and occupational therapy students by examining how values, communication styles, and expectations shaped by generational experiences influence student learning and educator perceptions in clinical settings. Participants will identify two key generational factors – such as communication preferences and attitudes toward feedback – that may impact student performance and behavior during fieldwork, and will explore how these factors manifest in supervision dynamics. The session will also introduce three practical strategies to help fieldwork educators effectively respond to and support students across generations, focusing on fostering clear communication, adapting teaching approaches, and creating a supportive learning environment that promotes student growth and success.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Describe how one’s knowledge of ‘generational’ differences can support the relationship between fieldwork educator and students.
- Name two ‘generational’ related factors that could be impacting fieldwork student performance behavior.
- Identify three strategies to support fieldwork educators in their response and support of students.
